چکیده

Type–token ratio (TTR), or vocabulary size divided by text length (V/N), is a timehonoured but unsatisfactory measure of lexical diversity. The problem is that the TTR of a text sample is affected by its length. We present an algorithm for rapidly computing TTR through a moving window that is independent of text length, and we demonstrate that this measurement can detect changes within a text as well as differences between texts.

Cutting the Gordian Knot Adequacy, Realism and Equity

Despite the almost impossible complexity of the climate deadlock, it is possible to map its most profound contours. They range, unsurprisingly, outside the traditional domains of climate politics, across lands defined by post-Cold War geopolitics, the struggle for development, the challenges of sustainability. For all this, however, they define a tangle – a Gordian Knot – in which three princip...

The New Incurable Wound

who married the fertility goddess Cybele, became king of Phrygia. He then dedicated his chariot to Zeus in the city Gordium and fastened it to a column with a large, complicated knot that became known as the Gordian knot. An oracle predicted that the future king of Asia would be the only person who could disentangle this knot. Many individuals who traveled to Gordium attempted to untie the knot...

Gordian Distance and Vassiliev Invariants

The Gordian distance between two knots measures how many crossing changes are needed to transform one knot into the other. It is known that there are always infinitely many nonequivalent knots ‘between’ a pair of knots of Gordian distance two. In this paper we prove an extreme generalisation of this fact: there are knots with arbitrarily prescribed Vassiliev invariants between every pair of kno...

Gordian Unknots

Numerical simulations indicate that there exist conformations of the unknot, tied on a finite piece of rope, entangled in such a manner, that they cannot be disentangled to the torus conformation without cutting the rope. The simplest example of such a gordian unknot is presented. Knots are closed, self-avoiding curves in the 3-dimensional space. The shape and size of a knot, i.e. its conformat...
